Professional Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Prototype Development Engineer – Softgoods to join our team. This role is crucial for supporting prototype engineering, hands-on prototype creation, and defining efficient processes for small-quantity builds. The successful candidate will work closely with the lead Development Engineer, contributing to fabrication activities, material preparation, component assembly, and the operation of specialized machinery. This position offers an opportunity to provide valuable feedback for process and tooling improvements, directly impacting our development pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
Prototype Engineering and Creation
- Support prototype engineering activities and create innovative softgoods prototypes.
- Perform hands-on fabrication tasks and assist with small-quantity prototype builds.
- Provide initial support to the lead Development Engineer in various fabrication efforts.
Prototype Process Definition
- Define clear and repeatable prototype processes for small build quantities.
- Support the development of robust fabrication methods.
- Adhere to defined prototype and fabrication processes and offer constructive feedback for their enhancement.
Material Preparation and Assembly
- Prepare materials essential for production-line activities.
- Assemble components for seamless integration into the production line.
- Manage materials used in softgoods prototype creation.
- Support the preparation of components prior to fabrication or assembly stages.
Work-in-Progress and Tool Handling
- Efficiently load and unload work in progress from tools.
- Load and unload tools into and from machines.
- Ensure the safe and effective handling of tooling and prototype materials.
Specialized Machinery Operation
- Operate specialized machinery that requires manual skills.
- Proficiently operate sewing machines.
- Support hands-on fabrication utilizing specialized tools and equipment.
Process and Tooling Improvement
- Provide insightful feedback to the Development Engineer regarding process improvements.
- Offer recommendations for tooling improvements.
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance prototype fabrication activities.
Technical Requirements (Must-have)
- Proven experience as a designer or maker with prior hands-on fabrication expertise.
- In-depth knowledge of textiles.
- Familiarity with films.
- Understanding of synthetic materials.
- Knowledge of leather.
- Proficiency with adhesives.
- Demonstrated team-oriented approach.
- Willingness to contribute beyond defined responsibilities.
Desired Skills (Nice-to-have)
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design.
